Jan de Haas developed an interest in music, particularly percussion, at a young age. In 1979, he completed his studies at the Music Academy and was awarded the government medal. He then continued his education at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he earned a performance diploma after three years in 1982. During his time there, he accompanied American musicians such as Tony Dagradi, Phil Wilson, Dave Kikoski, Makoto Ozone, and many others. In 1981, he became a professional musician and joined the Jazz Orchestra of the BRT under the direction of Etienne Verschuren as a drummer. When he returned to the United States in 1982, he won first prize at the Jazz Hoeilaart jazz contest. Since then, he has continuously accompanied numerous Belgian and international jazz musicians, including Chet Baker, Toots Thielemans, Philip Catherine, Steve Houben, Richard Rousselet, Jacques Pelzer, Charles Loos, Michel Herr, Erwin Vann, Pirly Zurstrassen, Jack Van Poll, Eddie Daniels, Rick Margitza, Jerome Richardson, Nathalie Loriers, and the Fabrice Alleman Quartet (including one concert with Randy Brecker), among others. He has contributed to various recordings with Guy Cabay, Paolo Radoni, Diederik Wissels, Jean-Pierre Gebler, J.R. Monterose, and Ali Ryeson. He also teaches at the Conservatory of Antwerp. Since 1994, he has led his own group, in which he plays vibraphone, marimba, and other percussion instruments, releasing three CDs.
